The Last Days, Chapter 2
Saying Goodbye
By Arthur Pepka, aka GrayPathMage
The dawn found Cambrey already up and starting his day. After dressing, he broke his fast with leftover bread and stew from the previous night’s meal. Feeling refreshed and confident, he set out to meet Two Eagles. As he soared over the Mediterranean Sea, he gazed down at the blue-green waters. Fond memories flowed through his mind of his childhood spent near similar waters. Too soon, he reached the WhitePath encampment and had to land. As always punctual, Two Eagles stood waiting for him.
Cambrey alighted beside his friend and gave him greeting. "I have news that will end our misery. Our scouts claimed the Dark Codex and yesterday it was deciphered. Our forces now possess all the locations in which the enemy has hidden itself. We are to pass this knowledge on to Galus and let him go. All DarkPath mages are to turn themselves in for transportation off world. All who fight us shall be seized in a fortnight and sent to a prison world.”
“This is excellent news my friend. My wife obtained the coordinates for our world yesterday. Already we are packing to leave. I had not known that I would be freed from this task in time to join them when they all left. My secret fear was to be stranded here when the deadline passed.”
“Never fear, you will be able to join your loved ones tonight.” Cambrey said. The two men continued on to the tent where Galus was confined.
Once inside the dark shelter, Two Wolves sat behind a table while Cambrey woke the sleeping prisoner. Galus rubbed his bleary eyes and glared at his interrogators. “Today won’t be any different from before. You two must enjoy abuse and misery. Personally I have no issues insulting and ignoring you alternately.”
“Actually, today will be very different.” Cambrey said as he sat down. “We will be very brief today. When Two Wolves and I leave, so will you. I am informing you that we now possess the Dark Codex and have deciphered it. We now can find you hiding spots anywhere in the world.”
Galus actually blinked in astonishment at this news. “You have held me prisoner for so long. Now you are just releasing me to do what. Betray my kind to suffer what, your misguided definition of justice. Already we have experienced the indignity of surrender. Followed by the loss of our powerbase and mana reserves. Now we must give up our homes and be relocated to some place of your choosing.”
Cambrey sat down in his seat. Two Wolves responded to Galus, “We too must depart from the world of our birth. Because of your and your followers’ actions during the past war, all mageborn must leave. The common folk have taken it upon themselves to slay any person who may be perceived as empowered. Even innocent humans are falling under the blade. To survive as a people, we must depart or suffer extermination. Thank yourselves for this. My people curse you daily. Were you to go into the white encampment here, civil, peace-loving individuals would seek to rend you asunder. Such is the legacy of the DarkPath.” Overcome by his emotions, Two Wolves stood and left the chamber.
“Well I have performed my duty. When I leave, the guards will lower your shields and you can be on your way. What you choose to do is up to you. We will act as I have told you.” Cambrey stood and strode from the tent with out a further word. Outside, he basked in the morning sunlight before joining his friend at the nearest fire pit. “Let me go ahead and say goodbye. The Goddess may not weave our paths together after this morn. I wish to impart my fondest farewells to you and all your kin. I hope that one day our two worlds will be able to commingle.”
Two Wolves reached out and clasped his friends arm. “Go with the grace of Her, my friend. Long have I enjoyed your companionship. I hope your wife will also fare well in her pregnancy. May our children and our children’s children share the same bonds of friendship we two have shared. Know that you will be remembered throughout our generations.”
With a final embrace, the two men separated, never to meet again. Tomes could have been filled with their shared history and songs had been written about their exploits.
